What do you think of when you hear the word digital marketing?

Though I have talked about it in some previous post, when you hear about digital marketing it’s all about the marketing of brands, products and services online. But the name digital marketing itself is just a tag used to describe various processes, platforms and tools that are used in marketing brands, products and services online. In this post, I will highlight most of the various components that make up digital marketing.

Digital marketing is a vast subject; there are various components and tools that are used to carry out digital marketing activities. It might be difficult for anyone to master all of these components. The ideal way to practice digital marketing is to know the basics of all the components and then master two or three components based on the one that fits your online marketing strategies. As an aspiring expert in the field, you can focus on the one that you can easily understand and practice effectively.

Content Marketing

Content Marketing is the engine of digital marketing activities, it’s the main focus of whatever other digital marketing components have to do. Content Marketing involves the creation of contents like a blog post, social media post, video, images, infographics etc that can be promoted to a targeted audience.

The essence of content Marketing is to create awareness, promote brand, goods and services, grow traffic and increase fan base.

Social media marketing

Social media marketing involves using various social media network to promote a brand, product or service. Digital Marketers uses various social Media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram etc tools to promote content.

Search Engine Optimization(SEO)

Search Engine Optimization; also known as SEO is one of the most technical components in Digital Marketing. It’s about websites or blogs, about it ranking organically high in search results like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. One of the thing that makes it difficult is the fact that you can’t predict which keywords will rank high in search results because search engines make use of algorithm which changes day by day.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

This involves promotion of website or blog content in search results. Unlike Search Engine Optimization, instead of hoping that your content gets ranked high in search results you can promote your content to rank higher once someone searches for the same or similar keywords that you used in your content.

Tools like AdWords help you create a Search Engine ads campaigns.


Analytics helps monitor various activities online; this is what helps online platforms owners to know the behaviour of their traffics (users).

Analytics helps to monitor the source of traffic to a platform, like where they are coming from, what they are viewing, how long they are spending on the platform and the links they are clicking on. Digital marketers use analytics to determine and develop digital Marketing strategies, like where to focus their campaigns and all that.

Email Marketing

This involves marketing activities that are done through electronic mail.

Email marketing enables an end to end communications. It’s a cost-effective way of marketing online. Because when you have an email address of anyone, you don’t need to pay for any promotion to reach that person. All you need to do is to push your content directly to that person’s inbox.

Automation Marketing

This involves setting up digital Marketing activities to act automatically. For example, there are tools that you can use to automatically publish your post from your blog to your social media, also you can schedule your post for publishing on your blog or schedule an email to be sent to your email list. You do the settings and they act at the appropriate time, these are how Automation Marketing works.

Digital Marketing Integration

This involves blending together various components of Digital Marketing in a way that they serve and complement each other. You can create a blog post, share it on social media with a link and gain traffic to website or blog through that link, thereby increasing your website or blog traffic. Your traffic may also sign up for your email list etc. all acting independently but fulfilling the main purpose of implementing digital marketing activities.

An effective digital marketing campaign will always make use of two or more digital Marketing components and that is what is called digital marketing Integration.

Ok, that’s all on the list. These are some but mostly the major components of Digital Marketing. If you do your research online you may find out about other components, like I said early digital Marketing is very vast. The best way to learn it is to focus on the components that will serve you or your interest best.
